Why Every Home Needs Deadbolt Locks

If you have a security system you are likely wondering why you would also need deadbolt locks. Deadbolt locks are a standard lock for exterior residential doors.

Types of Deadbolt Locks

The two main types of deadbolt locks are the single cylinder deadbolt lock and the double cylinder deadbolt lock. A single cylinder deadbolt lock only needs one key to open it from inside. On the other hand, when you have a double cylinder deadbolt, it requires two keys to unlock. It makes sense to most people, as to why the single cylinder deadbolt is the most logical option. If you’re not able to put your hands on both keys for the double cylinder door then it is likely you won’t be able to get out of the door. However, since you only have to keep up with one key for the single cylinder deadbolt, you have less to worry about. It is simply easier to keep up with one key and not two. Some would reason that a double cylinder deadbolt lock offers better security but the truth of the matter is that it offers the same level of security as a single cylinder. Whether you have a single cylinder installed or a double cylinder deadbolt lock the important thing is that you have one of the other on your exterior doors.

Deadbolt Locking Features

There are three main parts of a deadbolt lock, the bolt, the cylinder and strike plate. They work together to give you the level of security that you need to prevent intrusion. The bolt is what actually secures the door in place. The strength of the door is also important because if it isn’t, the door can be kicked in with the deadbolt left in the doorframe. Since it is the bolt that plays the most significant role in securing the lock, it makes sense that it is made from reinforced metal. The bolt gets inserted about an inch past the edge of the lock before it locks. It is up against the strike plate, further adding to its stability. When the doors strike place perfectly aligns with the lock, you know that it will be effective in preventing intrusion.

Pins & Tumblers

Inside the cylinder are the pins and tumblers. The pins are situated at various levels in a tube. This tube is inserted into the cylinder. It is the locks springs that keep the pins in their right position. If you happen to insert the wrong key into the lock, it will not move. When the correct key is inserted, there is no problem opening the door. This means that the pins are now aligned within the grooves of the key. This will then allow for you to unlock it. When the bolt move, you know that you have moved the bolt from the frame of your door, which can now be opened.

Effective Ways to Use Deadbolt Locks

You will only be able to benefit from a deadbolt lock if it is installed correctly. If it is not correctly installed then it won’t give you the benefits you need. Unfortunately, it will only benefit the burglar attempting to gain access inside. You’ll need the right locksmith, who will take their time to make sure your lock is properly installed if you wish to reap its benefits. Check to make sure the locksmith that you hire is reputable and that they have licensed, professional locksmiths. These are the things that will make them accountable if the deadbolt lock was not installed correctly and someone was able to gain access. You will have peace-of-mind with deadbolt locks on your doors.
